Syllabus for Math 303

Fall 2010

Title of the Course: Applied Mathematics

Instructor: Ali Mostafazadeh (Office: Sci.154; Office Hours: Mod. & Wen. 10:00-11:00)

Textbook: “Mathematical Methods for Physics and Engineering,” K. F. Riley, M. P. Hobson, and S. J. Bence, 3rd Edition (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2006)

Website: http://portal.ku.edu.tr/~amostafazadeh/math303/math303_F2010/math303.htm

Topics to be covered: Complex numbers; Calculus of several real variables; Vector Calculus; Dirac Delta function; Fourier Analysis; Calculus of a single complex variable.

Attendance: Students are strongly advised to attend all the lectures and PSs.  Students are allowed to miss at most 5 lectures without a penalty. If a student misses more than 5 lectures, 2 points will be deduced from his (her) total numerical grade (G) for each lecture (s)he misses. For example missing a total of 7 lectures will lead to a deduction of 14 points. This rule applies regardless of whether the student has a valid excuse not to attend the lectures or not. 5 bonus points will be added to the total numerical grade (G) of those students who will miss at most 3 PSs.

Evaluation method: Students’ progress will be evaluated according to their performance in homework assignments, midterm exams and the final exam. There will be four extended quizzes (mini exams of up to 50 minutes), four homework assignments, two midterm exams and a final exam. The minimum of the grades for each quiz and the corresponding homework assignment will contribute as 10% to the total numerical grade. The midterm exams will contribute as 15% and the final as 30%. The schedule for quizzes and exams has been posted in the webpage of Math 303.

Policy for Homeworks: Homeworks will be collected in class. The assistant will not accept late homeworks nor will he return them directly to the students. If a student fails to turn in his (her) homework by the deadline, his (her) grade for that homework set will be reduced by 10 points (out of 100) for each day passed the deadline.

Make-ups: If a student misses a quiz or a midterm exam and has a valid excuse, his (her) grade in the final exam will be substituted for the grade in the missed quiz or exam. If (s)he also misses the final exam, (s)he will be given zero in the quiz(zes) and exam(s) that (s)he has missed regardless of whether (s)he has a valid excuse or not. If a student misses the final exam and has a valid excuse, (s)he will be given a make-up exam.

Auditing Students: In order to get an AU, a student must attend at least 20 lectures.

Suggested Method of Study: Students are advised to study the subjects covered in class immediately after the lectures. Reading the lecture notes and the book is necessary for grasping the subject, but it is by no means sufficient. Students must try to reproduce the definitions and proofs of the theorems on their own. They are expected to spend an average of six hours per week on studying the material covered in class in addition to the time spent on homework assignments.
