This triennial workshop is named after Odysseus, a king of Ithaca of Ancient Greece who in the epic poems of Homer goes to the 10-year-long Trojan War and after the war wanders another 10 years before reaching home.

An 8-episode summary of the travels of Odysseus are told in the Online Library of ThinkQuest where each episode is annotated with a map showing a possible route sailed by the king and his men. Also Professor Nathaniel Teich presents on his world literature pages a detailed map of those possible routes. This map was originally drawn in Tim Severin's book "The Ulysses Voyage: Sea Search for the Odyssey," (Random House UK, 1987, and Dutton Adult, USA, 1987). You may click the thumbnail image to the right to see an enlarged version of the map. Click to see the enlarged map of Travels of Odysseus

On his way back from Troy to Ithaca, Odysseus and his men were driven by the winds first to Ismarus, the land of the Kikones. They destroyed and plundered Ismarus, but were eventually driven away with losses. From there they sailed on, ran into a storm as they were going around Cape Malea off the Pelopenessian peninsula. Their ship drifted past Cythera for nine days. They eventually end up in Northern Africa in the land of the Lotus-Eaters on the tenth day, where those men who ate the lotus lost "all memory of the journey home." This is probably why none of the crew remembered their short landing in Çeşme* on the western coast of Anatolia!

All nine members of the Organization Committee salute you with a hearty welcome aboard. Stay tuned and bookmark this webpage if you do not want to be left out... We will set sail for a four-day journey early in the morning of May 26, 2009.

Çeşme*: pronounced like in "chaeshmae".
