Computational Prototyping of Optical Communication Systems

The design of optical communication systems involves the optimization of a large number of parameters associated with the transmitters, receivers, optical fibers, optical amplifiers and other components that make up the system. With increasing bit rates and transmission distances, and the use of optical amplifiers and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology, the interaction of dispersion, nonlinearities and noise in the optical fibers became of paramount concern. Our focus in this project is on novel formulations and computational approaches to the performance evaluation and optimization of optical communication systems.
