Math-Sci Seminar Speaker: Dr. Cem Güneri, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Sabancı University, Istanbul Title: Curves over Finite Fields and Codes Date: Thu 7 Dec, 2006 Time: 16:45 Place: Science Building, Room Z42 Abstract: The aim of the talk is to present two applications of curves over finite fields to coding theory and to survey some mathematical developments they led to over the past 25 years. The first application is a code construction due to Goppa using Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors on curves. The second application involves an important class of codes called cyclic codes. Namely, weights in cyclic codes are related to the number of rational points of certain family of curves via Hilbert's Theorem 90. Recently, the speaker and F. Özbudak were able to find a general minimum distance bound for cyclic codes using this relation. If time permits, we will also describe this result.
