Funded research projects at the Optical Microsystems Laboratory

Microvision Inc. (Washington, USA): Microvision has been a strong supporter of OML since 2001. Contracts are renewed every year. Several projects are completed over the years on novel technologies related to electromagnetic actuators, MEMS and other types of scanners, micro-optical components, and 2D and 3D display architectures.

Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic MicroSystems (FhG-IPMS, Dresden, Germany): OML has been collaborating with IPMS since 2001. Each summer 2-4 undergraduate researcher from OML visit IPMS for about 2 months. A patent licensing agreement was signed between the parties in 2005 and in connection with that, IPMS extended a contract to OML to design and develop a MEMS based Fourier Transform Spectrometer system. The latest contract ended in 2008. Now the parties collaborate in a EU funded 7th framework project MEMFIS on this topic.

TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey): OML has been involved in several research projects supported by TUBITAK. The project duration is typically 3 years. Completed projects: (1) Development of a electro-plated magnetic actuator and micro-scanners; (2) Development of nanomagnetic materials and actuators (coordinated by Prof. Levent Demirel, Koc Univ. Chemistry Department).

ARÇELİK Inc. (Istanbul): Designed and developed an optical turbidity sensor using an LED. Duration: 2006.

AYGAZ Inc. (Istanbul): Development of laser triangulation system for 3D shape measurement and defect detection of LPG tanks. Duration 2006-2008.

MİGROS-KÜMPEM (Istanbul): Developed a low-cost polymer based barcode scanner using electro-plated NiFe and nanomagnetic particles embedded in polymer solution for actuation. Duration 2003-2005.

NSF (National Science Foundation, USA): Collaborative research grant for developing novel tools for MEMS metrology between Prof. Levent Degertekin group at Georgia Tech and OML. Duration: 2004-2006.

3DTV (European Commission Grant): OML was a member of the European Network of Excellence in Capture, Transmission, and Display of 3D information. The project was started in 2004 and completed in 2008 and coordinated by Prof. Levent Onural, Bilkent Univ., Turkey. The HELIUM3D 3D display development project is a spin-off project from the 3DTV network.

NEMO (European Commission Grant): OML was a member of the European Network of Excellence in Micro Optics. The project was started in 2004 and completed in 2008 and coordinated by Prof. Hugo Thienpont, Vrije Univ., Belgium. Dr. Urey was leading the Optical MEMS workpackage. The work lead to collaboration between OML and Heriot Watt Univ. (UK), VTT (Finland), IMT Univ. Neuchatel (Switzerland), and Warsaw Technical Univ. (Poland).

MINOS-EURONET (European Commission Grant): OML was a member of the European Specific Support Action to support mainly Eastern European partners working in the area of MIcro NanO Systems. The project was coordinated by Dr. Dan Dascalu, IMT, Romania.

MC2ACCESS (Chalmers Univ, Sweden): Collaborative research grant with Prof. Peter Enoksson group at Chalmers Univ. for two Koç researchers to use Chalmers clean room facilities to fabricate MEMS devices. The project was coordinated by Prof. Ulf Sodervall and funded by European Commission. Duration: 2007-2008.
