Havva Yagci Acar

Dr. Havva Yagci Acar is an Assistant Professor at Department of Chemistry, Koç University. She received her Ph.D. from University of Southern Mississippi in Polymer Science and Engineering (1999).  Se joined GE Global Research Center (GE GRC at New York) as a post-doctoral associate between 1999-2002 and worked at the same organization as a lead professional until 2004.  She led the magnetic nanoparticles research at GE GRC. She has received Whitney Technical Achievement Award in 2000. Dr. Acar has ten journal and conference publications and a book chapter in addition to one issued and six patent applications.  Her research interests are synthesis and characterization of polymers (high heat polymers, biocompatible polymers, biodegradable polymers, responsive polymers, hydrogels), nanoparticles (superparamagnetic nanoparticles for diagnosis and therapy, drug delivery systems) and nanostructured materials (hybrid materials for sensors, separations, optics, nanocomposites).  She joined the Department of Chemistry in September 2004 and currently in the process of building her research laboratory.

Erdem Alaca

Dr. B. Erdem Alaca is an Assistant Professor at Mechanical Engineering Department, Koç University.  He received his Ph.D. from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Mechanical Engineering (2003).   He has eight journal and conference publications.   He is a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers.  His research interests are in the area of materials behavior/testing, micro and nano electro mechanical systems, solid mechanics and thin films/interfaces

Cagatay Basdogan

Dr. Cagatay Basdogan is an Assistant Professor in College of Enegineering, Koc University.   He received his Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University in Mechanical Enegineering (1994). He worked as a research scientist at Northwestern University Research Park for two years  before moving to MIT.  He was a research scientist and principal investigator at MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics and a member of the MIT Touch Laboratory and the Sensory Communication Group from 1996 to 1999. Then he joined to NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory of California Institute of Technology from 1999 to 2002 as a senior member of technical staff.  Dr. Basdogan has 3 chapters, more than 30 journal and conference papers and 1  patent and 3 technology innovation reports.  He has been a reviewer Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments (MIT Press), ASME Transactions on Dynamic Systems and Control, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, and a member of the organizing committee in many conferences. His research interests are haptic interfaces, robotic manipulation, virtual reality systems, and design of mechatronics systems.  He leads the The Robotics and Mechatronics Laboratory.

Ipek Basdogan

Assistant Professor

Dr. Ipek Basdogan is an Assistant Professor at Mechanical Engineering Department, Koc University. Before joining Koc University she worked as a senior member of technical staff in Guidance and Control Analysis Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) between the years of 1997-2002. At JPL, she worked for the Space Interferometry Mission Project where she was the technical leader of a cross-functional team responsible for developing physics and mathematics based space telescope models encompassing the optics, structures, dynamics, and control disciplines in an integrated computational environment.  She received her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from University of Illinois at Chicago in 1997.  During her Ph.D., she worked as a Laboratory Graduate at Argonne National Laboratory-Advanced Photon Source. Dr. Basdogan has about 20 journal and conference papers. Her research interests include modeling and design of opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, dynamics and structural analysis, vibration testing and experimental analysis.

Levent Demirel

Dr. Adem Levend Demirel is an Associate Professor at Department of Chemistry, Koç University.  He received his Ph.D. from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA, in Physics (1996).  He worked as a post-doctoral associate at FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (1996-1997).  He received Werner von Siemens Excellence Award (2003) and TÜBA (Turkish Academy of Science) Young Scientist Award (2001).  He has 34 journal publications. His research interests focus on surfaces, interfaces, thin films and characterization of nano-structured materials. Dr. Demirel is involved, among others, in EU-COST-D19 Nano-Chemistry project. His labs have various surface & thin film characterization equipments.

Tekin Dereli

Dr.Tekin Dereli  is Professor of Physics at Koç University.  He received his Ph.D. from Middle East Technical University in 1976. He worked at Middle East Technical University and Ankara University. He had been visiting Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison,USA,  Lancaster University,UK, University of Karlsruhe, Germany, University of Vienna, Austria and had been an Associate Member of ICTP, Trieste, Italy.   Dr. Tekin Dereli  joined Koc University in 2001. He has more than 90 journal and conference publications.He  received  research grants from  NATO,  Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, NSF and Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. He won the prestigious Science Prize of Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey in 1996.He is a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences since 1994.Dr. Tekin Dereli's  research interests are in quantum mechanics, quantum information theory, gauge theories and gravitation.

Durata Haciu Ertek

Dr. Durata Haciu is a member of  Department of Chemistry, Koç University. She received her Ph.D. from Bosphorus University (Turkey) in Analytical Chemistry (1992).  She worked as a laboratory instructor at Boshorous University until 1995.  She worked as the manager of the Synthesis and Quality Control Laboratory at Ertek Yalitim, Ltd, for Waterproofing Construction Materials between 1995-1997 and then she joined Koç University as an instructor at the Chemistry Department and the School of Health Sciences.  Her research activities involve synthesis and characterization of nanoparticulate metal oxides (especially rare-earth), solid state synthesis of metal ligand complexes and metal oxide nanoparticles dispersed in polymeric nano-fibers.

Alper Kiraz

Dr. Alper Kiraz is an Assistant Professor in Department of Physics, Koc University.   He received his Ph.D. degree from University of California, Santa Barbara in Electrical and Computer Engineering (2002). Between 2002 and 2004 he worked as a post-doctoral associate at the Institute for Physical Chemistry in the Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich, Germany (September 2002 - July 2004) and received Alexander von Humboldt fellowship (1 July 2003 - 31 July 2004). Dr. Kiraz has 10 journal publications, 16 conference proceedings, 7 conference presentations. His research interests are Nano-Optics, Nano-Fabrication using multi-photon polymerization, and single photonics. Dr. Kiraz has joined the department on September 2004 and currently in the process of building his Nano-Optics research laboratory.

Adnan Kurt

Adnan Kurt is a member of Department of Physics, Koc University. He received his M.S. degree from Boshorous University in Physics (1987). He worked as a research assistant at Psychology and Physics Departments at Boshorous University between 1988-1992.  He worked as a data processing systems consultant at TUSTAS, Turkey while acting as a part-time lecturer at Air Force academy between 1990-1992.  Later, he became a technical manager at Sigma Ltd. Optics & Photonics Division (1993-1996).  He worked as a research scientist at Physics Department at Istanbul University Medical School (1992-1995).  He joined Mitra A.S., Turkey, in 1996 as a Business Development and Technical Support Manager (F.P.).  He is a founding partner of Teknofil Ltd., Turkey and an R&D engineer since 1993.  He joined Koc University in 1999.  His areas of specialty are optical, medical and biomedical instrumentation, laser design, neurophysiology, digital printing.

Ismail Lazoglu

 Dr. Ismail Lazoglu is an Assistant Professor at Department of Mechanical Engineering, Koç University. He received his Ph.D. degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering (1997).  He worked as a post-doctoral fellow at University of British Columbia (1999-2000) in the Manufacturing Automation Laboratory and at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1997-1999) in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.  He received the Werner von Siemens Excellence Award in 2004.  He was selected as the Outstanding Reviewer by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering in 2001.  He has about 30 publications and five current projects, some of which were sponsored by the Scientific and Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), Arcelik A.S., and Research Scholarship Program of the Deutscher  Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) for Foreign Scientists. He leads the Manufacturing Automation and Research Center at Koc University. His current research projects are “Modeling Mechanics and Dynamics of Drilling Process”, “Thermal, Mechanical and Dynamic Analysis of Hard Turning Process” in collaboration with Technical University of Aachen from Germany and Renault-Nissan from France, “Process Monitoring in Computer Numerical Controlled Machines”, “Dynamics of Boring Processes” in collaboration with University of British Columbia-Canada, Boeing and General Motor Co., “Modeling of Die and Mold Machining Processes”.  He has contributed to the development and integration of the following modules into the advance machining simulation and optimization software – CUTPro; Temperature Module: UBC File No: #00-65 with Prof. Y. Altintas; Turning Module: UBC File No. #00-69 with Prof. Y. Altintas, F. Atabey and Dr. S. Engin; Boring Module: UBC File No. # 00-68 with Prof. Y. Altintas and F. Atabey. The CUTPro software package is now being used in more than 200 research institutions and industrial companies worldwide.  Dr. Lazoglu and his research group has extensive experience in Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing, System Dynamics and Control areas. The group has been performing basic and applied research in all these areas. Various scientific and applied industrial research have been performed in collaborations and supports of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Scientific and Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), Boeing Co., Caterpillar, General Motors Co., Mitsubishi Materials Co., Arcelik A.S., Artesis A.S., Ford Motor Company, Renault-Nissan Co., University of British Columbia-Canada, Technical University of Aachen (RWTH)-Germany.

Metin Muradoglu

Dr. Metin Muradoglu is an Assistant Professor in College of Engineering at Koc University.   He received his Ph.D. degree from Cornell University in Aerospace Engineering in 2000. Then he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Cornell University before joining Koc University faculty in 2001. He was a visiting scientist in Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University during the summer of 2004 and conducted research on multiphase flows in microfluidic systems.  Dr. Muradoglu has 7 journal papers and 15 conference presentations.  He’s been reviewer for Combustion Theory and Modeling, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General and ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics, and is member of AIAA, AIChE and SIAM. His research interests are computational modeling of dispersed multiphase flows, microfluidics, biological cells and biological cell fluid interactions, turbulence modeling and turbulent combustion, and scientific computing.

Ozgur Mustecaplioglu

Dr. Ozgur E. Mustecaplioglu is an  Assistant Professor at  Physics Department,  Koç University.  He received his Ph.D. from Bilkent University in Physics in 1999.  He worked at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atomic-Molecular and Optical Physics Group for three years as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate.  Dr. Mustecaplioglu has 28 journal and conference publications, 2 book chapters, and 8 invited talks. He chaired  in International Summer School on Quantum Computation at the Atomic Scale, Istanbul-Turkey, June 2003. He is the vice-president of International Commision for Optics, Turkey Chapter, a regular referee for Physical Review A and Physical Review Letters, and a member of American Physical Society, European Physical Society and Turkish Physical Society.  He has received research grants from Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA, Distinguished Young Scientist Award 2004), TUBITAK and European 6th. Framework Programs. His research interests are Quantum Optics, Nonlinear Optics and Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics.

Alphan Sennaroglu

Dr. Alphan Sennaroglu is a Professor in the Departments of Physics and Electrical-Electronics Engineering at Koç University.  He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1994.  He published over 70 journal and conference papers in the field of solid-state lasers and ultrafast optics.  He received 2002 ICTP/ICO (International Commission for Optics) Award, 2001 Werner-von-Siemens Excellence Award, and 2001 Tuba (Turkish Academy of Sciences) Young Scientist Award.  He was the Program Chair of the Conference on Solid-State Lasers and Amplifiers during Photonics Europe 2004.  He is a member of the Optical Society of America, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the founding Chair of the IEEE Leos Turkish Chapter (1999-2003). In 1994, he established the Laser Research Laboratory(LRL) at Koç University. LRL focuses on the development and characterization of novel solid-state lasers. To date, studies have been carried out in the areas of tunable solid-state lasers, diode-pumped laser systems, passive Q switching, saturable absorbers, spectroscopy of novel laser/amplifier materials, ultrashort pulse generation, and nonlinear optics.

Ali Serpenguzel

Dr. Ali Serpenguzel is an  Associate Professor at  Physics Department,  Koç University.  He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in Physics (1992).  He worked at the Center for Laser Diagnostics at Yale University (1992-1994),  as a visiting professor at Harward University during the summer of 2001 and 2002.  He is acting on the board of Optical Society of America, Society for Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, and The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey.  Dr. serpengüzel has more than 60 journal and conference publications, 5 book chapters, more than 100 presentations, 32 invited talks.  He chaired sessions at  many international conferences.  He is a member of Association of Turkish American Scientists, International Commission for Optics,  IEEE LEOS Turkey Chapter (Past-Vice-President, Founding Member), Optical Society of America, Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.  He has received many research grants from The European Office of Aerospace Research and Development, UK (2002-2003), The Scientific & Technical Research Council of Turkey, (2000-2002), The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Belgium (1999-2004) , The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, USA (1997-1998), The International Center for Theoretical Physics, Italy (1996-1998)  His research interests are microphotonics (microcavities and photonic crystals), nanophotonics (semiconductor materials and devices), biophotonics (biological and chemical species detection), nonlinear optics (stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, two photon absorption), laser diagnostics (laser induced fluorescence, chemiluminescence, Schieleren photography).

Mehmet Somer

Dr. Mehmet Suat Somer is Associate Professor at Department of Chemistry, Koç University.  He received his Ph.D. from Technical University of Clausthal in Inorganic Chemistry (1979).  He worked as a Privat Dozent (Assoc. Prof.) at the Technical University of Clausthal (1994-1998) and was also conducting research with the group of Prof. Dr. H. G. v. Schnering at the Max-Planck-Institute Stuttgart, Solid State Physics and Chemistry Department between 1988-1998. He has 160 publications.  Dr. Somer is specialized in Solid State Chemistry and Vibrational Spectroscopy.  His research interests are synthesis and characterization of Ternary boron nitrides, Nitrogen containing Ceramics and precursors, Polar Intermetallic Compounds (Zintl Phases), Cluster compounds, and Nanoscaled materials.

Murat Sozer

Dr. Murat Sozer is an Assistant Professor at Department of Mechanical Engineering, Koç University. He received his Ph.D. from University of Delaware in Mechanical Engineering (1995).  He worked as a design engineer at Aselsan Military Electronics Inc., Turkey (1986- 1989).  After completing his PhD, he worked as a technical editor to Prentice-Hall Publishers (1996 -1997) and as a post-doctoral fellow and visiting professor at University of Delaware, Center for Composite Materials (1995 -2000).  He has published a book and two chapters on manufacturing processes of composite materials, 25 journal and conference publications and an issued patent in addition to many workshop and oral presentations.  His research interests are flows through porous media, free-surface flows, modeling and control of composite material manufacturing processes, resin transfer molding process, and acoustics.   Dr. Sozer leads the Composite Materials Manufacturing Laboratory.

Hakan Urey

Dr. Hakan Urey

 Dr. Hakan Urey is an Assistant Professor at Electrical Engineering Department, Koç University. He received his Ph.D. degree from Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) in Electrical Engineering (1997).  He worked at Microvision Inc., Seattle, Washington as senior research engineer (1998-2001) and acting as a consultant since 2001.  He chaired SPIE MOEMS Display and Imaging Conference (USA) and SPIE MEMS, MOEMS, and Micromachining conference (France) in 2003 and 2004. He edited two books, has two book chapters, more than 40 journal and conference papers and seven patents. He is a member of SPIE, IEEE-LEOS, and OSA.   His research interests are in the area of micro-optics, micro and nano electro-mechanical systems, and display and imaging systems. Dr. Urey currently has 6 funded projects including two EC FP6 network of excellence projects: NEMO and 3DTV.   Dr. Urey`s Optical Microsystems Laboratory (OML) has, under his direction, 1 post-doctoral researcher, 5 full time graduate assistants, and 7 undergraduate assistants. OML is a member of EUROPRACTICE software and microfabrication foundry services. OML is equipped with state-of-the-art optical and opto-mechanical equipment, electronic test and measurement instrumentation, software design tools such as CADENCE (IC design and layout), ANSYS (Finite element modeling, MEMS design), ZEMAX (Optical design), and plating and lithography laboratories for microfabrication. Total worth of equipment within the laboratory exceeds 400,000 Euro. Currently, he is constructing a 60m2 clean-room and the equipment purchased within MINT project will greatly enhance the capabilities of the clean-room.

Arda Yalcinkaya

Dr. Arda Yalcinkaya is a post-doctoral associate at College of Engineering, Koc University.  He received his Ph.D. from Technical University of Denmark, Graduate School of Microelectronics (2003).  He received exceptional performance award in 2001 at Technical University of Denmark (DTU), a Turkish Education Foundation (TEV) scholarship between 1997 and 1999 and a Sabanci (VAKSA) scholarship between 1992 and 1997. He was a reseach and development engineer in Aselsan MGEO, Ankara Turkey between 1999 and 2000. He has been a visiting scientist in Interuniversity Microelectronic Center (IMEC),  Leuven, Belgium and Centro Nacional de Microelectronica (CNM), Barcelona, Spain in 2000 and 2003, respectively. He has more than ten journal and conference publications.  Research interests are Micromechanics and Microelectronics (MEMS, Capacitive, magnetic and piezoresistive smart sensors; modeling, design, fabrication and characterization), VLSI (Analog IC design, RF IC design, VLSI Neural networks, sensor interface/signal conditioner circuits, Crystal oscillator circuits, low voltage design). He is currently working at the Optical Microscopy Laboratory.

Emel Yilgor

Emel Yilgor is a member of Department of Chemistry, Koç University.  She received her B.S. degree from Middle East Technical University (METU) in Chemical Engineering (1979).  She worked as a research scientist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1980 - 1985) and as an associate scientist at Mercor Incorporated, Berkeley, CA, USA (1985-1987).  Mrs. Yilgor worked at Polymer Division of Thoratec Laboratories Corporation, CA, USA as a Production Manager between 1987-1989 and at Goldschmidt Chemical Corporation, Hopewell, VA, USA as Process Development Manager between 1989-1994. In 1994 she joined Koç University as an instructor.  She is a member of Polymer Research Laboratory at Koç University.  She has over 50 journal articles and conference proceedings as well as 8 issued or filed patent applications.  Her research interests are structural, thermal and physicochemical characterization of reactive oligomers, preparation of specialty polyurethanes, investigation of the structure-property relationships of multiphase polymers, melt processing, compounding and modification of thermoplastic polymers, reactive extrusion and electrospinning of polyurethaneurea elastomers.

Iskender Yilgor

Prof. Iskender Yilgor is a Professor at Department of Chemistry, Koç University.  He received his Ph. D. from Middle East Technical University, Turkey (1977) where he also served as an Assistant Professor until 1980. Between 1980 and 1985 Dr. Yilgor was a Visiting Scientist at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA. Then he joined Mercor Division of Thoratec Laboratories Corporation, Berkeley, California, USA, as the V. P. of R&D and was employed until 1989. Between 1989 and 1994 he served as the Director and V. P of R&D at Goldschmidt Chemical Corporation, Hopewell, Virginia, USA. In 1994 he joined Koç University as the founding faculty member of the Chemistry Department, where he also established the Polymer Research Laboratories.  He is a recipient of 1999 Werner von Siemens Award in Excellence in Science and Innovation and 2003 TUBITAK Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions in Science.  He is the holder of a number of US and European Patents and has over 100 publications in the field of polymer chemistry.  Prof. Yilgor also co-authored a book on elastomers.  His research interests and expertise include design and preparation of segmented polyurethanes, hyperbranched copolymers, silicone-containing elastomers, epoxy resins, bulk and surface modification of polymeric systems, structure-property relationships in segmented copolymers, influence of hydrogen bonding on morphology and properties of TPUs, reactive extrusion and industrial and biomedical applications of polymers.

Ersin Yurtsever

Professor

Prof. Ersin Yurtsever is a Professor at Department of Chemistry and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Koc University.  He received his Ph. D. from Virginia Commonwealth Uni., USA, (1976) in Chemistry.  He worked as a researcher at Bielefeld Uni., Germany until 1980. He also worked at Jagellonian Uni., Poland and at Virginia Commonwealth Uni., USA, between the years of 1978-1983 and Darmstadt Teknik Uni., Germany (1987-1989) as Visiting Professor.  He worked at Middle East Technical University, Turkey 1980-1995 before he joined Koc University.  He held many administrative positions before his current position at Koc University: Associate Vise President and Secretary of the Scholarships and Fellowships Program at TUBITAK (1991-1992) and Dean of the School of Education (1993-1995) at METU. He has organized of many national and international symposia few of which are II. National Chemistry Symposium, 1985  Ankara, II.  Chemical Physics Symposium,  1993, Ankara, Frontiers of Chemical Dynamics, NATO ASI, September 1994, Antalya , Dynamical Systems III, December 1996,Bolu,  MOLEC XIV, Sep. 2002, Istanbul. His research areas are Molecular Quantum Chemistry, Molecular Simulations, Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Clusters. He receives funding from many organizations like NATO, TUBITAC and Volkswagen Foundation, Germany.  He has about 90 journal publications, two book chapters and he is an editor of Frontiers of Chemical Dynamics, Kluwer Press (1995).  He is a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences.
