KOC UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
HEMORHEOLOGY, HEMODYNAMICS AND VASCULAR BIOLOGY LABORATORY
Hemorheology deals with the flow properties of blood, determinants of this behavior, alterations in pathophysiological processes and the consequences of alterations in these properties. Hemodynamics is the study of blood flow in the vasculature and its determinants. Flow properties of blood are important contributors to hemodynamics. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) constitute 99.9% of the cellular content of blood, therefore the mechanical properties of red blood cells (i.e., red blood cell mechanics) determine the special, non-Newtonian behavior of blood. Hemorheology, Hemodynamics and Vascular Biology Laboratory mainly aims at studying red blood cell mechanics (deformability and aggregation), effect of alterations in these properties on in vivo hemodynamics and vascular function on one hand, and molecular mechanisms in the regulation of red blood cell mechanical properties on the other hand. Hemorheological alterations have important clinical consequences and the properties of blood cells and plasma have been the targets of various therapeutical approaches. |
