Syllabus for Math 303

Fall 2011

Title of the Course: Applied Mathematics

Instructor: Varga Kalantarov

Lecture:  Monday  14:00 -- 15:15    Wednesday 14:00 -- 15:15

Office:    SCI 162   Phone: 1558    e-mail: vkalantarov@ku.edu.tr

Office Hours: Tuesday  15:30 -- 17:00  or by appointment.

Main Textbook : Erwin Kreyszig, Advanced Engineering Mathematics,

10th Edition, John Wiley &  Sons.

References:     M.L.Boas, Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences, John Wiley & Sons 1983

P.V. ONeil, Beginning Partial Differential Equations, John Wiley & Sons 1999

Topics Covered in the Course: Review of multivariable calculus: Greens, Stokes, divergence theorems  and their applications; Fourier analysis : Fourier series,  Fourier integrals and applications; Dirac delta - function and distributions; Complex analysis: complex numbers and complex functions, complex integration, power series, Taylor and Laurent series, residue integration.

Evaluation method: Your progress will be evaluated according to your performance in the

quizzes (Q), midterm exam (MT), final exam (F), and attendance (A). There will be several

quizzes and two midterm exams (MT1&MT2).

Your final grade (G) will be computed according to the formula:

G = 15 % Q  +  20% ( MT1+MT2)  +  40% F + 5% (A) .

Midtern 1 will be on October 28 and Midterm 2 will be on December 16, 2011.

The date and the time for the final exam will be announced later.

Attendance: Students are strongly advised to attend all the lectures and PSs.

5 bonus points will be added to the total numerical grade (G)  of those students who will miss at most 5 lectures.

Academic Honesty: Koç University expects all of the students to be honest and in the present context, academically honest.

Please note that failure in this respect has severe consequences.  Please read the KU catalog, p 37.
