Koç University Department of Mathematics Syllabus for Math 503 Fall 2009 Title of the Course: Applied Mathematics Instructor: Varga Kalantarov Lecture: Monday 11:00 –12:15 Wednesday 11:00 – 12:15 Office: SCI 162 Phone: 1558 e-mail: vkalantarov@ku.edu.tr Office Hours: Tuesday 15:30-17:00 or by appointment. Textbook: “Advanced Engineering Mathematics,” E. Kreyszig, 9th Edition (John-Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, New Jersey, 2006) Website: http://home.ku.edu.tr/~vkalantarov/math503/ Topics to be covered: Linear algebra: Vector and inner product spaces, linear operators, eigenvalue problems; Vector calculus: Review of differential and integral calculus, divergence and Stokes' theorems. Ordinary differential equations: Linear equations, Sturm-Liouville theory and orthogonal functions, system of linear equations. Attendance: Students are strongly advised to attend all the lectures and PSs. 4 bonus points will be added to the total numerical grade (G) of those students who will miss at most 4 lectures. In addition, 5 bonus points will be given to those students who will miss at most 3 PSs. Evaluation method: Students’ progress will be evaluated according to their performance in three quizzes (Q1, Q2, Q3), two midterm exams (E1, E2), and a final exam (F). Quizzes will be mini exams of up to 50 minutes long. They will be given during the PSs. The midterm exams will be at most 75 minutes.. The total numerical grade (G) will be computed according to the following formula. G = (Q1+Q2+Q3) ´ 10 % + (MT1 + MT2) ´ 20 % + F ´ 30 %. Exam Schedule: Midterm Exam 1: November 6; Midterm Exam 2: December 17. The precise dates for midterm exams and the final exam are to be announced by the Registrar’s Office. Make-ups: If a student misses a quiz or a midterm exam and has a valid excuse, his (her) grade in the final exam will be substituted for the grade in the missed quiz or exam. If (s)he also misses the final exam, (s)he will be given zero in the quiz(zes) and exam(s) that (s)he has missed regardless of whether (s)he has a valid excuse or not. If a student misses the final exam and has a valid excuse, (s)he will be given a make-up exam. Auditing Students: In order to get an AU, a student must attend at least 20 lectures. Suggested Method of Study: Students are advised to study the subjects covered in class immediately after the lectures. Reading the lecture notes and the book is necessary for grasping the subject, but it is by no means sufficient.
