The social program of the conference will include the welcome
cocktail, reception dinner, and also a full-day excursion to the
world-famous
Ephesus founded in the 10th century BC by
the Ionian Greeks.
Ephesus used to be the ancient capital of Ionia,
flourished between 600 BC and 500 AD. Once with a population of 300,000 it
became the biggest center of the trade road that went from Asia to Europe.
Also included in this guided tour is a visit to the
House of
Virgin Mary, a major pilgrimage place on the top of Bülbüldağ
(Mount Nightingale) in
Selçuk.
We firmly believe that
Çeşme
will not only nourish ODYSSEUS 2009 with a cozy atmosphere, but will
also provoke a sparkling platform for the exchange of field experience and
research ideas among the participants.
The information about Ephesus
and the House of Virgin Mary has been adopted from
TurkishOdyssey.com, the website of "A
Traveler’s Guide to Turkey and Turkish Culture" which
is the first such book for Turkey ever written by a Turk. Also OTTI Travel
Company maintains
an
excellent dedicated website about Ephesus which you might want to
glimpse before the day
of the excursion.
